3yo hen. Yesterday, she ate a lot of food and laid a normal egg, after that she played. At 4:00 she fell asleep and barely woke up. Drank a little water , no food. Today morning, she is much more active but won't eat or drink!

Yesterday's poop was normal. Crop empty. There may be a slight bulge in throat though. She keeps on pecking the air, mostly the left of her neck, Did she damage it?

How do I help her? She means a lot to me.

Where is the bulge in her neck? Does it feel like air under the skin or hard? Do you have a picture of her and the bulge? Videos can help as well, uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo with a link posted here. Can you mix some watery feed and hold it up to her beak with a small cup or lid?

Thank you for your response.
I tried to give her some watery feed but while she pecked at it. She would immediately spit it out, shaking her head.

I cut her overgrown beak, thinking that might be the problem and she started drinking water!
Unfortunately, she's still not eating. Poop is normal albeit more mushy. The bulge has gone.
Any advice?

You can always use dropper or syringe of water or yolky water on top of beak while holding her. Be gentle & slow as not to aspirate.

Most likely culprits are respiratory, impacted crop, bound egg. Definitely keep a close eye and perhaps quarantine her. Helpful: VetRx, probiotics scrambled eggs & wet pellets, fresh yolky water, soft crop & booty massages.

Sadly…

All great suggestions. Google Respiratory, impacted crop, bound egg one or more may be issues.

Where are you located?

If any of the Avian Flu symptoms develop, it is EXTREMELY important for the sake of the rest of your flock and community to check with your vet and county disease center to see where to test her poop. And if she’s unfortunately passed to send her too. :(

Hope she pulls through. 🙏🏼

Hi there! How is your hen doing these days? I’m having a similar situation with one of my 3 year olds. Did you ever figure out what the bulge was in her neck? My girl sounds like her situation was very similar to yours- wouldn’t eat or drink, hardly stayed awake, strange bulge in her neck- She is doing much better after she regurgitated, but I’m still concerned. I’m hoping your hen is still doing well!

In this case, the hen simply had an overgrown beak. I think the bulge was simply because she was very thin. My hen is still doing great!

Hope your hen gets better.

I’m glad to hear your girl recovered well.
