anyone seen this before?

Hi all. I had some hens processed by a friend, and in one of them, she discovered this . . .

Has anyone seen something like this before? Can you tell me what it is?

Those are definitely undeveloped eggs, although I'm not sure I've ever seen that many of them, nor so large. That hen probably was an excellent layer.

thanks! that's kind of what we thought, but she hasn't laid an egg in months (like more than 6 months). My friend also found some yolks in her abdomen.

I knew that chickens already had all the ovaries for future eggs inside of them but never saw it. And didn't think it would be that big. Intriguing.

the gal who did the processing has done many hens before and had never seen anything like this, so I don't think this is normal . . .

It definitely isn't usually that big. My guess is that for some reason the hen was partially developing the eggs, making them a lot bigger than they usually would be, but for some reason not completing them. The ovary "clumps" are usually quite a bit smaller.

Yeah, this definitely intrigues me as a medical issue. It's nothing I've seen before, and doesn't comply with most reproductive disorders I've heard of, so I imagine whatever the cause is, it's rare. I'll be adding it as an odd possibility to my mental diagnostic list, though.
