Hey, I am new here and looking at building my own coup. Online I found this site and was hoping that somebody here has used and can tell me if it's worth the price. As I said before, I am completely new to this and just figuring out where to start. The site is here http://eb230dlck4jeq822oggigcn47-.hop.clickbank.net/

Just
poking around I see that there are quite a few people making their own so I am encouraged by that.

Thanks in advance for your help!

cheers

There's just too much info available on the web to justify buying coop plans IMHO. Plenty of free stuff out there. Just do your research. This forum has a great database of posted links to articles written by very knowledgeable people.

And before you buy anything, just read the coop and run section of this forum thoroughly. If you can't find what you're looking for, then you might consider buying a guide. Enjoy!

I think whether or not you need to buy some kind of guide depends on your construction experience, or if you at least have access to someone with experience.

If you don't have either of the above, a guide migh be a good place to start. I definitely agree with spending a lot of time on this site, because it will really help you figure out what you want and need. Pick out a design that appeals to you in both usefulness (size, etc) and appearance, and see how much info you can garner about building it. There are a ton of pages and threads with detailed descriptions and pics of different buildings.

As for that guide you linked to, I don't know anything about it. But it looked too gimmicky for me. I get suspicious anytime someone says, "BUT WAIT there's more!" you know? Just for a contrast, go to www.thegardencoop.com and see what I mean.

That's the plan we ended up buying, and honestly (having zero construction experience) it has been a helpful place to start. We've modified the plans based on what we've read here and elsewhere on the internet, and we've gotten some advice from friends. I don't regret buying the plans at all.

You know something...these online "BUY MY CHICKEN COOP PLANS OR ALL YOUR CHICKENS WILL DIE" websites really tend to tick me off. They choke up the search engines with all their garbage websites when you are searching for legitament free chicken house/coop plans. These plans *might* be ok but that money could be well spent on actual materials...I've heard of a couple of people who were dissatisfied and was having lots of trouble getting a refund via the "moneyback guarantee".

Something else I don't like about these type of websites is that THEY PUT A HOOK IN YOUR BROWSER so that when you try to leave the website a warning popup comes up "making sure" that you want to leave the website....I'm *very* suspicious of these type of popups.

DO NOT BUY FROM THESE TYPES OF WEBSITES!!!! BUY A GOOD SHED BUILDING BOOK INSTEAD!!!!

Normally these websites are posted here by "users" who register and then post the links and are gone...kind of a "hit and run" tactic.

BTW, I see that this is your first post so welcome to BYC.

Here's my experience.

When I started out, I looked far and wide for a step by step set of plans for a good coop. I couldn't find any. Even the "how to build a shed" books were no help as I didn't want to build a shed, I wanted to build a chicken coop. More importantly, I wanted a set of clear, step by step plans which would make building the coop a no brainer.

I eventually did what most everyone on this board does. I looked at all the coops, got a rough idea of what I wanted to build, sketched it out, and then built it. I've very happy with my coop and take great pride in knowing that I designed and built the whole thing. That being said, it was hard work, stressful, and took about 2 months of work on the weekends.

Shortly after I finished my coop, I went on the Portland Coop Tour and visited the home of the designer/builder of The Garden Coop. Another poster in this thread mentioned The Garden Coop. I was very impressed. It's a very nice looking coop, very functional, and well within the amateur builder's ability to build. The best part.... he has a well written, step by step, no gimicks, set of plans he sells for a very reasonable price. I must admit that I had a certain sense of regret that I hadn't seen these plans earlier.

Every time I see a new egger post on this forum about the difficulty in finding a plan, I refer them to www.thegardencoop.com because his website is load with pictures, sample pages from the plans, and even some info from others who have built it.

First, Welcome to BYC. Second I agree with Ed above. I will stick my neck way out there and say without a doubt those plans are not worth your time. Enjoy the show the web site offers because that is the very best you will see out of the company.
I also understand that when you do not have experience you do not have experience and would like to suggest a solution. Post some details like how many chickens you want to keep, how big you where thinking about building a coop that sort of thing. Then see if the members here do not come through with some specific ideas, suggestions links to plans or whatever. If you know enough to realize the pointy end of the nail goes down and which end of the saw to grip. there is not really a lot more skill you will need. of course the less skill the more patience would be needed. Go to home depot and take a good look at how there wood sheds are built. that will tell you more about what you need to know than anything. Oh yeah use screws to hold it together. makes it a lot easier to take apart when you forgot to leave room for the thickness of a 2x4 here or there.

I'd search the coop section for ideas...some have even given step by step instructions! It's free, and others have used it. We revamped a childs tree house to become a chicken coop, but the ideas gleened from here were invaluable:)

Hi jb and welcome to the forums. My advice to you is to stay away from that website. You can do much better for free with a little time and effort here on BYC.
