So I need to clean the filter in my bolen tiller and I did that but realized I was out of engine oil needed to soak the the filter sponge.

the manual says to "use a high quality detergent oil classified 'for service SF, SG, SH, SJ' or higher, such as Briggs&stratton SAE 30. DO not use Special Additives"

My sister picked up "saxon gold SAE 10W-40 motor oil" is this acceptable? does anyone know? I am so confused

I go by anything that is 10w or 5w is for a car.

You can finde SAE 30 at walmart and some convenince stores. You MIGHT be able to skip by with the other, but I wouldn't.

ETA: I am in NO WAY a mechanic, but I have lots of "toys" and I only use what they call for. Hence the many, many bottles of oil and stuff in our garage. Cheaper to buy a bottle of oil than an engine.

DUR. I need to read better. Air filter - I use any clean oil I can find. Actual oil for the ENGINE, I don't mess around with.

It will say on the bottle usually....read it all over. The bottle should have a little round type seal that says what it is on the back somewhere. You can hardly buy oil that is not detergent....but any name brand oil will be more then likely detergent. You don't want to run non detergent normally because it will sludge up your engine. Some older things say to use it but that is because they are made different then stuff today is. It should work fine. You never said air filter but that is usually what you soak and it is not a big deal, what you have will be fine. Also remember this oil the filter is being soaked in is not getting burned or used through the engine so it won't harm anything.

That's for the engine and has nothing to do with what you put on the filter
