Hi. Well, I made the leap and bought two ducks today. Will try to get pics tomorrow and post them, but in the meantime, I have LOTS of questions.
I bought a bag of poultry feed, have a small duck house(plan to get a larger dog house), bucket of water, a metal wash tub (will get a wading pool) and temporarily have them closed off from the chickens in their own little pen. I thought they were smaller ,so had to sort of improvise a little when we got home.
I bought from a woman on CL who had two that she said were juveniles, though they look full grown to me.
What age do they start laying?

How many eggs do they lay, and what color? I've read anywhere from 100-260 per year, and either blue, or white, depending on the website. Is it true they are quieter as far as ducks go? Are they friendly, or does it depend on how they were raised?

And any other information, anecdotes, or pics would be welcome. I am SO looking forward to my first duck egg!

Do I have one of each sex? They are supposed to be 4 mo old.

Even if the ducks are large, they may still be young. My 2 month old Welsh Harlequins are the size of my year old Khaki Campbells.

Ducks usually start laying around 20 weeks. With ducks, it's usually an egg a day for about a week, then they'll take a day off. They lay much better than chickens.

How friendly they are depends on how they were raised. You can still make them more friendly towards you by giving them and hand-feeding them lots of treats.

Good luck with your ducks!

Thanks. Looks like I have another month before they start laying, then. I think I have at least one hen, not sure about the other.

Yep - those are juveniles and look just like mine! You can't go by color to sex them. Look at their toenails - if they are black, they are girls; orange=boys.

These are my first ducks so I can't compare their quacking to other types, but mine are relatively quiet. I do have one who starts quacking every morning around 6:30-7am but only because she wants out of the pen. Once I let them out, they hardly make any noise at all.

Edited to add: yours look a little younger than 4 months. Do either of them have the blue stripe on their wings yet? Mine hatched in April and they have had it for several weeks already.
