I hope I'm posting this in the right catagory. My question is, are Araucana's and EE's the same breed?

No. Many people use the names Araucana, Ameraucana and Easter Egger interchangeably, but they are not the same. Araucana and Ameraucana are even different - they are each APA/ABA recognized breeds that meet a standard and are listed in the Standard of Perfection. Check out www.ameraucana.org and click on their "History" for more information in detail.

No. FAR from it. Even though Hatcheries enjoy to confuse their customers with Ameraucanas, Easter Eggers, and Araucanas, there's a difference.

Araucanas and Ameraucanas are not found through hatcheries or feedstores, and are quite rare. Especially Araucanas.

Aracuanas should have no tail, tufts (not muffs and beard) and should only lay blue eggs.

Easter Eggers are crossbred chickens who can lay almost any color of egg, usally have tails, and can come in any color or body type. They're just a chicken with a blue egg gene somewhere behind them.

Here's a young Araucana pair, one with tufts:

Thank you for the info! I was just wondering, as I am supposed to be getting Araucanas from Mt. Healthy this weekend and I read on another thread where someone got EE's from them also. When I ordered them, they listed them as Araucanas and I didn't see EE's on their list. I just wanted to know if I'm really getting Ar. or EE's.

If you orderd "Araucanas" from Mt. Healthy then you are getting EE's
Hatcheries dont sell true Araucanas..

Thanks Chris and fellow ohioan! That is the answer I was looking for. Why do they advertise them as Araucanas if they aren't true? They don't say they are ee's. Maybe I will be brave enought to ask them when I pick them up this coming weekend!

That's a question a lot of us breeders wonder. Trust me, you'll get nothing. Even I tried - I asked a LOT of hatcheries, and either got nothing in response or a couple hatcheries still insisting that they had purebreds, no matter what evidence you show them.

Very misleading to amatuers like me. It does'nt matter so much as I wanted the colored eggs, but it bothers me a little that I have been telling others I ordered Ar's and I'm getting ee's.

Actually, my two Easter Eggers were the product of my "newbie" -ness, too. I thought I was getting Araucanas. . . Then when I learned, I got myself some Ameraucanas. . . And even later FINALLY found myself a whole bunch of Araucanas. I just can't wait until they mature.

So now, I'm enjoying the ability to show people the difference with physical birds.
