Hi All,

My current, and last, batch of Cornish are a couple of weeks away from slaughter and are finally out on pasture. For the first month, apart from the early brooder time, these meaties lived in my front chicken yard with a mix of heritage breeds and freedom ranger type birds. Many of the Cornish have dirty looking under tails from drippy droppings, but NONE of the other birds have any problem.

What is the story on that?

I am really careful about clean water, food, and bedding. I didn't have coccidia troubles to my knowledge.

Thanks, Amy

I've found the same thing with all of my batches. In the beginning, I kept trying to keep them clean, as I'd heard stories of birds dying from crusty-butt, but after awhile, and bigger batches of birds, I found I was spending my whole day wiping butts- whether it was my two year old or my chickens. Needless to say, the chickens are on their own now. I decided that if a few died, so be it. But, none ever have, so I think it's ok to just leave them dirty.
