Are hens bothered by rooster crowing?

I have a rooster that starts crowing an hour before dawn... I came across this article that says a rooster's ears close when they open their mouths to crow, so they can't hear themselves: http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/s...al-ears-so-they-dont-crow-themselves-to-deaf/

But hens can't close their ears like roosters can, which means they hear all the crowing. Sometimes I check on my hens in the morning, and they are calmly sitting on the roosts even as the rooster is crowing his head off right next to them. How can they stand it?? How come they don't peck the rooster's eyes out for waking them up so early??

Because they’re chickens and crowing is part of chicken life.

I love hearing my roosters (cockerels) crow! I would imagine that the pullets their age enjoy it. But the old biddies probably want to kill them, they find everything these boys do annoying. One cockerel is going to the poultry swap tomorrow. Then it will be less noisy.
