I just switched my chicks over to using rabbit waterers since they're other water thing was constantly dirty. I left the original waterer in there until they got the hang of the rabbit waterers and just took it out today. I know they're drinking because one of the two waterers were empty this morning. I guess I'm just concerned that even though they're pecking at it they might not be actually getting that much water, that maybe most of it is ending up in the shavings? How can I tell if they're staying hydrated enough? Thanks!

You don't want the bedding to get wet. That can create issues with coccidiosis and fungal diseases.
I would put their regular waterer in there and if they go after it like they haven't had a drink in days they're probably not getting enough.
Elevate the waterer so the rim is at the height of their back and it will stay much cleaner. Set it on a couple bricks or something else to eliminate getting stuff scratched into it.
