Are pine cones okay in Chicken run.

I know leaves are okay but I have been wondering what about pine cones. We have a blue spruces that is dropping pine cones and I was wondering if I could put them in my chicken run. Give the girls something to scratch around in.

Our chickens scratch around under the pine and spruce trees all the time on their own. Don't see why putting the cones in with them for them to eat the nuts/seeds would be a problem. Only iffy thing I can think of is that a lot of them have sticky sap on them that could be a nuisance if it got in their feathers.
