I have an Americana Hen that is docile, smart and wonders off the property. I only let her out shortly before dusk now. I got her from my mom because the other chickens were mean to her. She was trying to set but her eggs were not fertile, so I bought some and my mom gave me a couple that was. The hen hatched them. The ones I bought were lavender Americanas the ones my mom gave me were cochin (hope I spelled that right) and a cross with cochin. I only have 5 all together. 3 Americanas and 1 chochin and 1 chochin cross. Here is my issue, A red tail hawk tried to get one of the chicks. The hen scared it off and the chick recovered from it's injuries. (we call it chicken nugget now). Watching them I see that the cochin chicks are more attentive to where their mother is and don't go far from her. The other 3 wondered off and don't seem to care that the hen led the other two back in the coop for the night. They didn't start looking for her until I walked up to them and they panicked. Are they trying to get eaten?

some seem smarter than others, but each bird is different. but there are breeds that are better suited for free ranging than others. if you free range you will lose some no matter what

good luck
