Are These Scaly Leg Mites?

NOT gasoline!!!!

AGREED!

Also, I really recommend doing a few soaks (again, 10-15 minutes with warm soapy water). What I noticed was that the soaks helped some of the "crud" get out from under the scales in a gentle way. (I would gently run my fingers down the leg, not at all hard, just to create some movement). The scales will still need to regrow, so you aren't "saving" them, but having some of the junk out helped them lay a little flatter and my hope was that it would create less of a "pulling" sensation because the scale wasn't being pushed out of the leg as severely.

Thank you, Anon, that's very thoughtful and a really good idea. I've also heard you can brush the legs with a soft brush like a fingernail brush or even an old toothbrush. That sounds like it would feel good as long as it's done gently. You're not trying to scrub the scales off!
Shadrach, a resprcted educator, is quoted in a link below, advising against this so I'm correcting my text. I had heard that gentle brushing was okay and even advised, but when Shadrach speaks, I listen. So, bottom line: No brushing!

I've seen people advising against this. It's not necessary and potentially just causing further pain.

I was nervous about using anything that could be abrasive, so I was more using my fingers to get the water moving around her legs. The difference after a few days of soaks and Vaseline was incredible. (The routine was soak for 15 minutes in the morning, then pat dry and apply Vaseline, repeat in the evening).
