So I went outside this morning to feed and get eggs as usual. Found one really awesome egg in the duck pen but when I looked closer I discovered that it was covered in mites or some other creepy crawly things.

Needless to say I am thoroughly disgusted. I have always assumed that my barn was reasonalbly clean. I feel like Im crawling in little bugs. Ewww. And to top it all off, the person who is supposed to come learn to feed all of my animals while I am on vacation is due in like an hour.

So my question is are they indeed mites? They were really small like smaller than a flea and I think that they were reddish brown in color. What can I do (other than giving the barn a compleat bleach water cleaning) to prevent and/or make them go away?

Ok Im off to the shower to wash away the invisable bugs and failure. I know you guys will have some answers for me when I get back! Thanks

First of all bleach and water will NOT get rid of the mites which it sure sounds like you have, I have had them several times because my chickens free range all day every day. you have to take out ALL the bedding and throw it out, dust the chickens and every nook cranny and nest with permetherin powder (poultry dust) Or you can use adams flea and tick spray with IGR. Retreat in 10 days. It is a huge chore but it has to be done or the chickens will suffer and can even die from the infestation. Best of luck to you
