Are ZIP TIES ok to use as legbands?

I left a lot of growing room in them. Are they ok to use? The girls are about 9 weeks old now. When should I re-check the size of them?

I've used them...you just need to check them frequently since they grow fast.

I have them on my hens but, didn't put them on until they were grown. Make sure you check them frequently so they don't get tight.

I have used them but check often. If they get too tight can cut off blood circulation.

We use zip-ties too, on our older chickens.

We use them all the time. They come in many many colors and widths so it helps to keep the chicks seperated. When we keep chicks over for breedings we change the bands or add to them. For example with our keepers last year we used thin pink ties, this year we will use wide green ties. For the birds that we have many of from certain breedings we might use two bands. We usually put them on at hatching, then just keep an eye on them and when they get too small we change them, we normally change them 3-4 times. They are cheap and easy to find and use.

I have wondered that myself. I tried some once, they are hard to write numbers on!!
