I am a newbie to AI :

(1) How many times per week/month should the hens be inseminated to insure fertility?

(2) After I inseminate the girls, should I wait and not use their daily eggs for a bit before taking some for hatching?

I have no experience here, Erthymom2.

I was surprised to find a really good text on poultry at the library. It is a small book and reads like something you'd get for an introductory 101 class. The title is "Principles of Poultry Science," author, S.P. Rose. Rose is a Brithish poultry specialist.

There is a short section on Artificial Insemination, apparently a common method especially with meat birds.

(1) How many times per week/month should the hens be inseminated to insure fertility?

"The length of fertile egg production after the last insemination varies between 6 and 12 days for geese, quail, ducks, and chickens." Rose says.

I have read elsewhere that sperm viability with the hen can continue all the way to 30 days. However, "A hen will have maximum fertility for only about 3 to 4 days after one mating." emphasis mine

(2) After I inseminate the girls, should I wait and not use their daily eggs for a bit before taking some for hatching?

I don't find an answer stated clearly in Rose.

Since fertilization occurs in the infundibulum of the oviduct and ova move out of the ovary every 23 to 30 hours for a productive hen, I guess that only a 1 or 2 day wait is necessary. It would depend on the speed of sperm migration in the oviduct.
