I just found a place that I can get Ash and Maple wood shavings at probably a reasonable price. There is a small local baseball bat maker that is trying to get rid of them and has them posted on Craigslist with a "name your price" cost.

He claims that the shavings have no treatment on them. It is just wood.

Two questions:
1 - Has anyone used Ash or Maple? I know to stay away from Cedar and anything treated.

2 - What would be a fair price? Pine shavings are about $5 from TSC. I might be able to barter with eggs once the girls start laying.

Hardwood (even the softer hardwoods like ash and maple) are more prone to mold, because they lack the resins that softwoods have; but if you start with dead-dry shavings and keep an eye on them, it's not unreasonable to try, IMO.

As far as a reasonable price, that's between you and the shavings guy

You'd probably want them less than the price of bagged pine shavings; how much less is a matter of choice. If he's advertising as make an offer, I'd start with a lowish offer

Have fun,
