Hi, we recently saw a flock of Astralorp s. When my husband saw the size of the discarded egg shells she was feeding back to the chickens, he was sold! We currently have a large flock of medium sized birds, laying medium to large brown eggs. Everything I have read on the internet, and through the forum indicates that Astralorps are a medium sized bird. This woman said they are heavy breed giving all extra large eggs. I know I had a wish wish last month of breeds I was considering and they were at the top. We went with BO instead. Now he’s on a hunt for these chickens...but I don’t want him disappointed...also, are they ok with medium breeds. From reading through the Astralorp thread, it seemed like everyone loves them , and they get along with others well...but, I wanted to here some more recent feedback. Thanks!

In my humble opinion, Black Australorps are THE best breed to keep! :love Well, all the Orps are fabulous which includes Buff Orpingtons are great too. :)

Australorps are super health hardy and most of them live well into older age. They can tolerate a huge swing in temps of hot or cold. They are super layers and many lay into their 6th year. They are SUPER friendly. If you want to keep them as a dual purpose bird, they are great for the table too. I will never keep a flock of chickens without including the Australorp! :)

I have a few different 22 week old pullets. 4 gold comets, 2 RIR, 2 Black Australorp hens and 1 rooster, 1 gold wyandotte, and 1 older buff orp. The BA are the calmest and sweetest, near daily eggs still medium size. Gold comets only 1 sweetheart and 3 a little skittish(not real bad though), but already large or XL eggs and they haven't missed a day yet. Early to mature and great producers. RIR a bit skittish and no eggs yet. Nothing yet from the wyandotte and a bit skittish. Buff Orpington stopped laying 6 months ago (she's 3 or 4 yo), but eggs almost every day L size.
One BA bonded instantly with my daughter. You can see by my profile pic BA are friendly.

I have kept Australorp for many many years.

I highly recommend them as a breed.
In my mixed flocks over the years they have NEVER been the trouble makers. I have kept them with bantams with no issues ever from them.

I had a group of 6-7 year olds processed and the lady helping me out said the Australorps still had a lot of eggs they could have made.
Yes even the 7 year olds were laying pretty regularly.

They really are a calm presence in the flock.

Australorps have been on my wish list also. Appreciate this information.

I own 3 Lorps and I don’t ever have any problems at all with them they never pick on anyone ever....even when I add new hens. They don’t really make any noise either. I don’t know what eggs they lay since they’re in a mixed flock but I love mine I wouldn’t mind having more.
