So after being gone for about 7 hours I come home to find a female in a pen with eleven other females and six males (approx numbers) and one of the girls is going smooth off. This has apparently been going of for a while because the males were pretty upset. She was chasing other birds and pecking. I did not see where any blood had been drawn but I went ahead and moved her to another pen with fewer birds, the same thing happened within just a few moments. From there I put her in a place by herself until I learn better. Any ideas? By the way, the birds are 4-5 weeks old and have been in these pens for a while with no trouble. There food and water was still good. Thanks for any help.

What type of quail, what size pens? Are you sure its a female? (just getting the basics covered

this sounds more like cock behavior? what color coturnix?

She has the typical spotted chest with a creamy color. She has been isolated for almost 48 hrs so I was thinking of trying her back with the others this evening.

that certainly sounds like a hen, but there are the occaisional late bloomer roos that look like hens, or even androgenous roos that will have spotted chests their whole life. It is a strange behavior for a hen tho unless new birds were just added-- hens can get territorial too. If you want to put her back into general population try moving all birds to a new and different pen simultaneously-- hard to be territorial if your in uncharted country...
