I have been reading a lot of the posts on mean roosters and i am having a problem with a year old cochin,, i have two roosters and the one is gentle and minds his business. The golden cochin is a pretty guy, but he is getting meaner and untrustworthy. He has flogged my grown daughter and also got my husband while he was bent down working on the mower, flogged him right up at his neck. He used to never bother me, but now he comes at me and he will come at you straight on or sneak in from behind. He flew up toward my face 2 days ago and when i put my hand out his spur went into my palm and i had to get antibiotics from the doctor as the next day i had a red area running up my wrist. Now i tried carrying him before. and i have wacked him around also. The day he got me I took a stick and busted the crap out of him and today he avoided me but keeps giving me the look , like he is waiting for his chance again, I usually let my chickens out around late afternoon so they arent penned up all the time. It worries me as we have young amish children who come in our yard. l worry that he will do a sneak attack on someone else even if he decides to leave me alone? Nothing like getting sued because your rooster hurts someone. I hate to cull him but it is coming close to it. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions or do you think it is a hopeless case. Thank you , donna

Sorry to hear your roo is being a pain. Surprised too! I've 2 - 14mo old Blue Cochin Roo's that live in the same yard. Every now n then they will fly at each other but for the most part they co-exist in harmony. They are gentle, mild Roo's for me and only bother my other Roos's when they are all let out to free range in the evening, but even then they aren't agressive. I was terrorized by a rooster when I was a young child so I've always said I won't tolerate a mean Rooster in my flock. Sorry, don't know of any way to break them of a bad habit.

thank you for your reply, i am sorry i am so late answering, but stupid me i seem to have had a hard time getting my posts. I am really afraid he will either go to auction or be culled as it isnt getting any better, the odd thing is, if i carry the same stick he avoids me but if it is a different one or another object he just comes a flying at me and we start the the smacking game again. i have had cochins for years and never had this problem before with them. it is what i love about cochins that they are so gentle and calm. thank you for answering and again sorry i was so late getting back to you. I got two self blue banty cochins the last time i ordered and of course one was dead on arrival and the one that is alive is a rooster. so i have eleven banty chicks and only four are hens. this is the first i have gotten the bantys, so not sure whether they will be as nice as the standards. thank you donna

A rooster that harmed me would be attending dinner on a platter that evening. There are too many nice roosters to put up with a rooster that PHYSICALLY injured me.
Your homeowners insurance probably won't cover you because you KNEW the rooster was a danger if he hurts someone.
You just got a bad one, cull it before it hurts some little kid.

Have a time out pen for when he gets aggressive and every time he does it put him in the small pen also try holding and petting for about a week and see if he tames...if not sadly culling is the final solution.
