Hi my name is Jennie and I am with a group called Don't Frack Broomfield. We are a group who opposes hydrolic fracturing which has been shown to cause air, water and soil pollution. Chemicals from fracking sites include Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Xylene, but there are many more on the list and these pollutants have sickened and killed farm animals across the country. I hope to have my own chickens one day if the voters in Broomfield decide they will allow it when it goes on the ballot in November. I am however very concerned that fracking in our town will not only effect the health of citizens, but also the effect the health of our chickens. Farm animals have the same susceptibility to disease that we have, but because they are exposed continually to air, soil and groundwater, and have more frequent reproductive cycles, they exhibit diseases more quickly, presaging human health problems. A study involving interviews with animal owners who live near gas drilling operations revealed frequent deaths. Animals that survived exhibited health problems including infertility, birth defects and worsening reproductive health in successive breeding seasons. Some animals developed unusual neurological conditions, anorexia, and liver or kidney disease. http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_27073.cfm
