Hey guys,

This is my first Post at BYC, and as soon as I get home from work I plan on posting Much better pics of each chick. But my wife talked me into buying 5 chicks from Atwood's Pullet banded Bin. Normally they tell me they are Rhode Island Reds, however the last 2 shipments they have no idea (their admission). So any Guesses of breed using this HORRIBLE pic would be nice.. I will post the new ones tonight.

We love these little puff balls, and I have a feeling this will be the start to a LONG LONG relationship with chickens at our NEW house in the country.. Finally got a couple of acres just outside city limits all to ourselves.

Thanks for the assistance, and I will update once I take the new pics.

My guess would be Black Australorp for the black/white chick, black sex links for the darker ones, and maybe White Rocks or Leghorns for the yellow ones, so many choices.

I would love to have an Australorp from this group.. BYC is addicting, the more I read the more I get sucked in..

If you had any Advice for a Newbie Chicken owner, what would it be?? I have read up on the basics of temp control, and food quality and Hygiene..

And where is a good place to get new chicks from? or do you recommend buying a few from an online site, then letting them expand your flock?

Belated Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! I know this place is addicting, chickens are addicting, they call it Chicken Math... Have you checked out the Learning Center? A lot of nice articles in there https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center a good chick starting one if that is what you are looking for https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/raising-your-baby-chicks
This time of year, most farm supply type stores carry chicks, they can be a good place to get them, just be aware of what you are buying and what the chicks you want should look like (ie, straight run means both sexes, red sex link pullets should be buff/reddish in color etc) since a lot of the employees have no clue about chickens. You might also check your state thread for local birds or advice on where your neighbors are getting chicks. Otherwise, the big commercial hatcheries are good places if you want some pretty chickens to lay eggs, they generally have a big selection and nice chicks, there is the occasional shipping problem related to the USPS usually, but most chicks make it fine. If you are looking for rarer breeds or want to get into heritage birds or showing, then you'd need to look into private breeders, most breeds have a thread on BYC and those are a good place to start. BYC also has a nice Buy-Sell-Trade forum.
There are a number of threads on the idea of What I Wish I Knew Before I Got Chickens that can be helpful to read ... an example https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...sh-you-had-known-before-you-got-your-chickens most seem to agree with Predator Proofing carefully, be careful about adding new birds/ quarantine, and realize you are going to want more chickens .....

Awesome.. Thanks for all the links and for the Welcome.. We know we will want more than this, I knew that when my kids (5,3, 11mo) reliazed they could hold a chicken.. oops.. so I have the sneaking suspicion that Chicken Math for my house will end up being something like ( X members in house * 10 Chickens each).. but at least there is an really nice upside.. Fresh Eggs.
