Hi, I have just bought a new rooster yesterday, meanwhile my old 'grandma hen' has gone clucky and has been sitting for three days. I don't usually let a new rooster out for a couple of days, but if I got him out amongst the girls, have I time to collect a small setting for Grandma to sit on? I have two mature girls, and three pullets that have only been laying a week. They are 26 weeks old today, and their eggs are still small. I have never introduced a rooster to young pullets before, and being an Australorp, he is a huge bird. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

We are glad you joined our flock.

Have you seen him mating with the girls?
You could crack a few eggs to check to see if they are fertile.
I have no idea how quick this would happen though, sorry.

I think there is time BUT if he is to rough with the young girls I would not allow it to continue.
Since their eggs are still small I would caution about hatching as they may be to small to allow proper and complete development.

Can you maybe buy some eggs that are fertile for your Clucky lady? They may have a better chance of hatching.

Welcome to BYC, Within 2 days of introduction if he mated the hens immediately, the eggs should be fertile. Pullet eggs are not generally good to incubate because of their small size. Any chance of getting some local fertile eggs for 'Grandma'?
