Is it possible for Australorps hens bred to a turken rooster to have some sort of sexlink chicks?

I order chicks off the net a few weeks ago as "Australorps." After they hatched and feathered in, they are black with a golden head, just like my BR/RIR sexlinks. Their necks are feathered, too.

The person I bought them from said she only has two breeds... Australorps and Turkens.

Thoughts?

I'll try to get pics posted so you can have a better idea of what I mean.

Well to create a sex-linked bird you need to use sex-linked genes that show differently in chick down. THe most common sex-linking used either silver or barred genes" Breed a silver or barred hen to a gold (not-silver) or not-barred cock--offspring are different colours as determined by gender.

An australorp would not be a good hen in a black sex-link cross as they do not come in a barred variety. And for making a red sex-link cross, you cannot tell whether she is silver or gold.

Depending on the particular variety and genes carried by the turken, it is possible that you could have a red sex-linked cross, but it would not necessarily work with all australorp hens.

You even if the Australorp hens were silver, you still wouldn't have red sexlinked chicks, you said they were black like Black sexlinks but you can only get black sexlinks with Barred/Cuckoo hens, so I you don't have sexlinks. The color you desrcribe is just black with gold leakage which is common when a black breed is crossed with a gold colored breed. So you should have both sexes with that color, kinda like Black Copper Marans.

Thanks for pointing that out! I said sexlink, but I really meant the color. That has to be what they are! A golden colored turken over Australorp hens. They have gold colored eyes, too. Nothing like the Aussies we've hatched off our own Aussie flock with coal-black eyes.

How've you been? Haven't talked with you in AGES!

Yep that's what I'm thinking too, most anything that is crossed with black will result in birds that are mostly black with leakage of either gold or silver, depending on what the other color was.

And I've been doing pretty good, thanks for asking. How about yourself? I've put the light on the Sussex a week or so ago and and they have finally started laying again so I should be about to start selling eggs soon if you are still interested.
