Hi! I am new here and am getting my first chicks soon. I live in Florida and am wondering if Australorps are a good choice. They have black feathers, but they also come from hot Australia, so I don't know. Would Austra Whites be better? These chicks will be pets, so I don't want the flightiness of White Leghorns. Thank you guys so much.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

I live in New Mexico and we see our share of heat. Australorps were my first flock and as long as they had shade, they tolerated the heat quite well. If it got into the upper 90s, I hosed down their run or outdoor shade and this cooled their feet and kept them cool. LOVE Australorps!! 💗

This said, stop by your state thread to chat with your neighbors on keeping chickens cool... https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/florida-always-sunny-side-up.305793/

Good luck and enjoy your flock!
