Hi ya'll, I'm having great success with my auto door on the secure coop which opens at 9am. Now I'm thinking about putting an electric gate opening arm on the metal walk in gate leading into the run that uses a remote control. I can then open it from the house to let them free range, then close it to keep the squirrels out( hungry little buggers). Of course I would have to open it once in a while for sqawking chickens that want to go in to lay, but I'm home pretty much all day. Does anyone use that set up and how well does it work for them.

I don't have that set up, but it sounds like a great idea, especially since you are home!
Hopefully someone else is doing this.

Would they have water available outside the coop run, assuming they would be foraging for food?

Yes I have an auto fill up dog bowl, Xtra large for my Great Dane, and the chickens love to drink from it when they are out free ranging.
