Why is it you call anywhere and you get an automated system that :

1. first asks you to press 1 for English.

2. offers you various other options to confuse you.

3.claim that the automated system is advancing customer service.

4.they treat you like an idiot when you do eventually speak to someone.

What is wrong with someone just answering the phone when you call.

You missed "When you do reach an actual human being, you can't understand what they're saying, and you have to spell everything you say to them."

I do dislike the computer systems, but often I can find the answer I need in their menu of options, and if not, I talk to a person. I haven't had any trouble even when talking to a foreigner, and I find killing with kindness tends to solve my problem very quickly. They're just doing their jobs like the rest of us. Blame the companies, not the employees, for the outsourcing and automated call systems.

Edit: I also watched a great documentary, I need to remember the name, in where English speakers in India and other countries where call centers have been outsourced to are taught the various U.S. accents so customers calling in don't have a problem with them. And they learn quickly and well, so the "American" you may be talking to who sounds like they are from the Midwest is probably not
