Hello! I am new to Backyard Chickens and am a second time chicken owner...I say second time because when I was married and lived in Oregon I had a flock of about 30 to 35 but that was several years ago. This year I set up a new coop and now have the beginnings of a new flock so I am excited to see how it progresses. I started with what I thought was 4 Barred Rock hens and a mixed Barred Rock rooster and a beautiful mixed rooster...as they got older two of the Barred Rock hens turned into roosters. LOL It's funny because up until just a month ago they did not act or look like roosters, while my other two roosters were obviously roosters. I don't know if this is because the two Barred Rock roosters are purebreds and are a little slower growing...? Anyway, since I don't need extra roosters they are going to be butchered soon and will be in my freezer ready for eating. :) Also, very soon I will have an additional 14 hens coming to join my one rooster and two hens. These new ones are still young, probably about 6 to 10 weeks old while my others are 5 months now. Well, I think that's enough for now, thanks for letting me join and I am looking forward to reading everyone's stories. :)
