I hatched my very first chick yesterday! It's the only one out of 10 that made it because my broody kept breaking all the eggs - I actually brought this last one inside on day 21 (after finding another broken egg with a fully developed dead chick in it) and 6 hours later (without an incubator), it hatched out (that's another story).

The other two 'araucana' chicks (I know they're really EEs) in the pics are chicks that I bought from the feed store today so that this little orp wouldn't be alone, while waiting for my next batch of chicks. We have a second broody that's due in 2 weeks - so far, she hasn't broken a single egg.

We don't have any roosters & I bought these eggs as b/b/s orpingtons. Can you tell this early whether this chick is a blue or a splash? I've never had either type before. It's kind of silvery/grey color.

This pic was taken when the chick was still wet (it looks large in this pic because the hands that are holding it belong to my 3 1/2 year old granddaughter):

I know the pictures aren't the greatest - I can't find my camera, so my daughter took these with her cellphone.

Thanks! 4 votes for splash, especially from experienced chicken owners, makes it unanimous. I was hoping for blue, but splash should be pretty too. I'm glad to know what to expect.

I just wanted to share an updated photo of my splash orpington chick, since the original photos were so bad. I finally found my camera and took some more pics a couple days ago. She (I hope it's a she) is about 1 week old in the pics.

Here she is at 9 weeks - I'm so excited that she turned out to be a pullet (1st chick & only orp I hatched). She's going to be so pretty and big too - she's growing at a much faster rate than the others and passed up the older chicks we bought to keep her company.

I think she does have splash markings, but is not white (like I expected). She seems more of a blue or lavender color with the markings? Is this typical splash coloring?

She's lovely! The splashes can have a lavenderish cast to them, that is true. Seems that is the case with them more as youngsters and to me, they appear less so later on, and more white. I'm jealous! Every splash I hatch at my house turns out to be male! If I send the eggs to someone else, they get MY splash pullet, LOL.
