Hi,

HELP! 7 chicks hatched yesterday but one cannot stand up and is stressing badly!

It sits on its bum with its legs straight out in front. It then tries to stand but it just throws its feet up and down

. It seems although it doesn't realise to put its legs under its body and get up.

Any ideas on what i can do to help?

Thanks

Is it spraddle legs? For a chick ihad like that I placed him in a shot glass with some paper towels so that his feet would be under him but no pressure on them. This way he learned that they were there and he eventually started to use his legs.

This is called spraddle legs it means that when the chick hatched your bedding was not thick enough (no harsh words intended) And the chick could not get her footing and her legs sliped out from under her and she gave up on trying to stand... Dont worry it can be corrected easly and its not realy as bad as it sounds. Quick question what kind of bedding in the incubator? It need to be kinnda rough... Like a dish towl or a paper towel... oh and you can yes correct it by placing her in a shot glass i use a bud vase or a childs tea set tea cup that kind of thing... She needs motion therapy every day (im going to shool to be an animal therapeic specialist) bout three times a day take her out and move her legs in a walking motion this will help her mabie try letting her "stand" with you supporting her this is all i know! hope my gabbing helped you!

Something else that helps them get their footing is a rug mat cut into pieces - the cream colored spongy kind that is made to keep the rug from slipping around on a wood floor. Just cut into sections and line the bottom of the chick's container.
