I woke up to check on my chicks this morning and I find one of my silver leghorns dead. I saw her eating and drinking yesterday and when I picked her up she felt cold. Her eyes were also closed. I thought that that was odd because I have two heat lamps and plenty of space for them to spread out in the heat. Two more of my chicks were acting the same way yesterday but they are still here. One is another silver leghorn and the other is an EE. What should I do to help them? Do they need a chick booster or vitamin supplement? The chicks came to me from Murray Mcmurray. All were alive and well. I didn’t have time to give them the electrolytes like I normally do when they first arrive. Should I make some now?

How old are they? Check the vent and make sure it isn't clogged over. Pasty butt is a quick killer and shipped hatchery birds are prone to it in the first few days.

How high are the lamps off the brooder? I have much better luck with "mother hen" brooder lamps like the Brinsea EcoGlow than I have had with hanging hot lamps. Using get-beneath brooder lamp like the EcoGlow I haven't ever had a chick loss. The chicks can regulate their temps really easily by going in and out from directly under the heating shelf.

I would add some electrolytes just to buck up the rest of them and make sure it wasn't general weakness that did her in. Might also give them a bit of soft mashed up boiled egg yolks too.

They are about 5-6 days old. They arrived at my house on Wednesday. The chick did not have pasty butt but a few of my other chicks do. I know how to treat pasty butt so that hasn’t been an issue.
My heat lamps are about 6” from the ground at an angle to allow maximum coverage and mobility between hot, warm and cool. They choose where to be which is normally not in the direct heat.
I am going to fix up some electrolytes in their water and see if that helps.
Good news is that the silver leghorn I have remaining seems to be doing better today. The EE doesn’t look any better so I am going to try giving her some cut up boil egg.
Thanks for your suggestions!
