Hello all! I was so happy to find two extra chicks added to my batch of three today now making five! The only issue is....one is absolutely terrified of me going out of her sight. If I go to a corner of the room where she cannot see me, she screams! I have not left my room all day and she just lays on my belly and jumps around me only! I've never seen this before! What should I do!?

Poor baby, wants a mama. You can't spend all day with her. She will have to cry. It seems that there is always one that will scream. And scream. Well, not always, but often, I hatch a lot, and I have them like that. They love just snuggling inside your hands together. It makes them feel safe like they are with a mama hen. They eventually get used to the others, and you will see her try and go underneath them, like they are the mama..maybe she is a bit more cold than they are. Make sure they are warm enough. And, not too warm. You can tell by the way they are around the light..underneath it..standing on tiptoes? Too cold. Staying away from the light? Too warm a bulb. Right under it, not crying, just right. Sometimes they can be just out from under the light and be fine just laying just outside of it.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. It's very easy to spoil chicks, very hard to unspoil them. Maybe she/he is meant to be the one you sell first.

Welcome to BYC!

I now have a screamer, but it is a loner..until some others hatch. Poor baby. I put an older clean dish towel in there, she goes under it like it's mama, and sometimes wanders out, then I put it back over her and she quiets down. She loves her mama dish towel.
