I am posting this to help anyone in the future or if anyone has insights for what could have caused my issue. I had a very sad case this morning. Firstly, my Bresse hatch went very badly. Of 28 eggs that I set 03/08, I had ONE hatch out healthy and one that hatched but sadly, we put down. It had an undeveloped vent and clearly had pressure and bulging in its backside. I had never seen that before, I washed it off to see better what was going on back there and put it back in the incubator to dry off. There was only a small amount of yellow ooze that was able to pass. When I checked a little later, the swelling was much worse and the skin was becoming even more taxed there. It looked like it was excruciating, so we put it down. Any insights? I really don't think there was anything that could have been done for the suffering babe. Good news is that I also hatched some Cream legbars and a Marans so the one hatchling that is good has buddies.

the pictures are hard to tell but there was no normal vent, just a very tiny lump where one would be

and then it just got worse..

Looks like omphalitis which is internal infection at the vent from bacteria entering into the gut with the absorbing egg yolk.

Disinfect everything would be my suggestion. I don't artificial incubate, using broody hens solely, so I'm not sure how humidity would affect (although I should high humidity would mess with infections)...but I do know omphalitis.
