My bantam is hatching babies, 2 so far with more to come. They just hatched today and she is pecking at them when they come out from under her and even picked one up by the neck with her beak. I fear she will hurt them pretty badly. Should I remove them as they hatch? I feel that is going to bring her/them stress, but can’t let her hurt them either. Also, it it ok for her to be under a heat lamp? I have the heat lamp over her as the babies hatch and it’s pretty chilly at night in the coop. Advice?

She'll keep the babies warm enough. Is she a first time mom? If she is grabbing them and pecking then you may need to take the chicks away from her.
She is a first time mom. I always thought she’d be a good mom. She’s been broody all along. I did take the first 2 out & put them in their own brooder. Another was starting to hatch. I hope she/they aren’t sad. Once they all hatch, do I just put her back into the coop with the other chickens or will she be stressed? This is our first time hatching babies and was completely unplanned. She was hoarding eggs in a hiding spot and sitting on them. The babies aren’t eating/drinking yet. Will they start soon?

Take all the babies to the brooder, then place momma hen with the flock. Remove the heat lamp off of her, she maybe overheating and stressing out and lashing at the chicks.

Just show them where the food and water is. You can gently dip the chicks beaks in their water to show them where it is.

Some hens just aren't ready to raise chicks their first time. Is she still pecking at them today?
I removed the first 2 chicks and she seems fine with the next 2 who have hatched. No signs of pecking, but maybe they are staying under her. I’m not sure if she was mad that the other 2 got out from under her.
