Baby chicks found dead

I have a new momma hen, she was sitting on 5 eggs. Found 3 dead so far, can not see anything wrong with them. She has 2 more under her. What would be causing them to die? They were a day old, perfectly formed. Is she stepping on them or smothering them?

Is she with other chickens? Other chickens may kill chicks. If not sometimes hens don't know what chicks are and they will kill them.

No, she is in one of planter pots. She has 2 eggs left and I checked and they are solid no liquid. Just have to see if they make it.

Sometimes first time mums just don't get it right.
I have had similar things happen, and could never find a reason for it.
The next time I let the hens hatch, they were both successful. I suspect it could be from smothering, because she don't yet know she has to lift herself up a bit

Agree, just waiting to see what happens with the 2 eggs left. I do have another broody hen, thought I will put them under her if she gets off of the nest.
