We always had them set up just like chicks and we never had a problem. Do not put a deep dish of water in there, they will drown. A regular 1 gallon waterer like used for chickens will work just fine.
You can make it as easy or complexed as you like - but basically- as long as you cover - something to keep them in- feed , water and warmth- you have it pretty well covered. As far as other details go- bedding can be a variety of different things- towels or shavings/ straw - anything that is not too slippery to prevent them getting splay leg. The feed should be a complete food- making sure they get all the requirements they need- different types have more or less protein - so its important to get the right one. Water containers can be a big issue- as if you get the wrong kind- you will forever be cleaning up a mess in the brooder. They need a container that is deep enough for them to get there whole heads into- but not their whole bodies.. Swimming should be outside the brooder to avoid huge messes.
A simple reading lamp can sometimes be enough to use to keep a few ducklings warm- or could could lash out and buy a ceramic globe brooder light.
I have a question about a duckling too. Mine is a little over a week old and I was wondering about putting some electolites (sorry about spelling) in his drinking water.
He seems to be doing very well but I just wanted to make sure.
I feel like a first time mother again and I have raised everything from human babies to horses, but this little guy has me nervous....
Thanks for the advice, just didn't know if they were any different then chicks. Got them this morning and they are tooooo crazy cute! One darker and smaller and one lighter in color and a bit bigger. Not sure what sex, but again, crazy cute. The smaller one is LOUD, and likes to try and eat my fingers.
