Okay yall… I’m new to raising chickens and have done a fair amount of research and I’m coming across an issue with two of my hens.

I have a total of 11 chickens of slightly varying ages but all close by a couple of months. None are over a year old yet. My two oldest are barred rocks. The next three are Easter eggers (one was a surprise rooster). Since we got a surprise rooster I decided to get 5 more chickens. 2 of those are Easter eggers and 3 are sapphire sky’s. The youngest 5 are not laying yet but are at the age where there are kind of close.

I have an 8x8 coop with one long roosting bar (I know I need more) and they have a run that’s around 10x20.

Everyone has been coexisting and living their lives until now. One of my hens is like super in love with my rooster. She is always next to him whether they are in the run or sleeping. Everything was going good until one day the rooster went to mate one of the barred rocks. She lost her cool and and starting attacking the barred rock as the rooster was mating. Rooster jumps off and she goes back after the barred rock. She drew blood so I pulled the barred rock out and nursed her back to health. Slowly reintroduced her into the flock and everyone was happy except for that one hen. So I pulled her and the rooster for two days (still in the coop but in a kennel) to let my barred rock get her barrings.

Just let them all out in the backyard not in the run cause I figured netural ground. The rooster mated with all the other chickens in front of the “bully” and no problems. The minute he mounted the barred rock she went nuts. Keep in mind I have two barred rocks. One she’s fine with but the other she can’t stand if the rooster touches.

Without the rooster courting or mating the barred rock, her and the “bully” hen are fine.

Why????? What do I do? Do I have to get rid of the “bully”?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Yes. Both barred rocks and the two oldest Easter eggers. Honestly I thought maybe that’s what triggered the meanness. The “bully” started laying a week before the attack. The barred rocks have been laying since mid August. The “bully” laid her first egg on October 2nd and and attacked the barred rock October 8th.

I’ve only had a rooster recently and I noticed that when laying starts there can be some drama. I haven’t seen a hen beat another one up in that precise scenario but I have a game hen who won’t let any of the other girls eat with her when the rooster is around. If he’s off somewhere she will eat with everybody but if he’s there she kicks every one but him away from the feed bowl.

Well today I let them all out together without the rooster… he’s in the kennel below. The barred rock the red hen is cuddling with that’s the one she attacks. So it’s only with him. Some type of weird chicken jealousy? Yours seems possessive of your rooster as well.

I have no idea what the deal is cause mine doesn’t even sleep with the rest of the chickens—the rooster sleeps alone in a tree above the coop full of hens and I have no idea where she sleeps. She just pops by once a day to eat with him. He has never even mated with her that I’ve seen

Hahahaha wow. I mean at least owning chickens is interesting. Why watch reality tv when we have them to entertain us? I bet she’s sleeping somewhere with her eye on the rooster. Hahahah

It might just be teenage hormones, you may just wait and see it resolve on its own. Once she realizes the rooster will still have time for her too she will feel better.
