I am retired and live on medium acreage. I had chickens about 10 years ago, but had a RAT problem and then a lot of dog activities here taking up space. I miss the chickens! I always enjoyed just sitting and watching them. So I have decided I want to get them again. I have a metal brooder that I used when I first got baby chicks. It's sitting out in one of the barns. I'd like to know what to use to clean it before I put new chicks in there.
Also, I have a plastic storage shed (6' x 8') and about 7' tall I'd like to use for the chickens. I do have a large area outside this shed which will be their "yard". I'll have to come up with roosting and nest boxes that will have to be free standing. There is quite a bit of upper ventilation in this shed. So, I'm hoping it will work out okay.
Their yard encompasses a Wisteria, a Snowball bush, a Walnut tree and an old large rose type bush. (The yard keeps getting bigger as I see how much I won't have to mow!)
I will be getting the larger brown egg laying hens. At this point I am thinking I'll get a couple dozen since I am going to be sharing eggs with others.
So, now I am looking for suggestions for cleaning up the old brooder and how to build the free standing roosts and nesting boxes.

Welcome

Hello and welcome to BYC. Maybe if you peruse the forums and ask questions in the pertinent ones, you will get the advice you are looking for.

This is a useful link of BYC guides to take a look at announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3 I’d suggest including your location using the guide in that link. You can use this link to contact members in your area - Find your State's thread.

Best wishes

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
You can use soap and hot water to clean it then spray it down with a disinfectant like dilute bleach. I'd do this a good week before getting chicks so it can dry thoroughly.
A shed the size you have will not comfortably hold a couple dozen chickens. I think one dozen would be fine though.
Have fun getting back into raising chickens.
