In the Brooder

Hi All -

M and Z from the Ithaca area - trying to get back into backyard chickens. We had a few ladies in Burlington, VT many many years ago - Faverolles to start (my most favorite), two bantam Cochins, and Pearl - our supposed to be silkie hen that surprised us - Oh, Mr. Pearl.

We’re back at it now - chasing down possible started pullets or young hens, hoping to avoid the brooder phase. If anyone knows of some folks looking to sell/rehome about 5 friendly, HEALTHY hens, we’re definitely in the market — and really hoping for Orpingtons (feel free to offer up alternatives).

We’ve also got a GIANT ragdoll cat named ”Cat-Cat”; one trash muppet (15 lb. pound puppy of unknown parentage) named Wren; and a Great Pyrenees rescue from TX who wants nothing to do with LGD chores and prefers to be furry decor — Finley. Love that dog - furry furniture sounds like an awesome lifestyle choice. If only lounging and looking majestic could be a career choice.

Anywho - if anyone has leads on young hens in upstate NY (or the surrounding) let me know. We’re hitting a few walls - mostly because we can’t take the Roos and chicks just aren’t our thing this round. Docile would be great - we have a little one (nearly 7) who’s really interested in helping with the hens.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I've got two chicks growing up with their broody mother. I did not plan on keeping them once she kicks them to the curb. They are purebred Double Silver Laced Barnevelders but they are a medium sized bird, not SOP. The mother weighs 1.25 kg in the father weighs 1.72 kg. The mother lays a small light brown egg.
They're only 11 days old so I don't know their genders yet.
