Hi everyone... first thank you for your help.. it is pretty nerve wracking to Be a first time duck mom!!
I took her to the vet - he said it is a sprained knee.. no need for additional niacin- also- I wrote to Mazuri, they have a nutritionist who wrote me back - said Mazuri does 164mg/ kg of niacin- so she should be good.
I feel so bad that her knee is sprained . He did a very thorough evaluation of her hip and legs , didn’t feel she needed x rays or pain medication! Which was relieving!

Do any of you know about how long before she is back to her usual self ?

Again- thank you all for your help.. it was very appreciated!! 💝🌻

Good job taking baby duckling to the vet!

I've never had a duckling with a sprain before, so I'm not sure how long the recovery should be. I imagine it depends on how serious the sprain is. Did the vet advise you to limit activity? I'm not recommending it if the vet didn't, I'm just curious.

164mg per kg? Isn't it little bit much? As per a bird .a lite dose also work but could be regarded her condition .

Healing time for bird is fast as their immunity speed up with care and diet . Still mark on calendar about 3-6 weeks .

Medicine start showing improvement since 48h to 72h If there's no improvement after 7 days once re-consult with your vet .

If she is in growing phase chances of healing is very high .

I think sometimes people accidentally feed an incorrect diet to their ducklings, so we end up repeatedly seeing ducklings with nutrition related leg problems. The feed store where I originally got my duckings from recommended an incorrect food for my duckings 5 years ago, I suppose I was just fortunate to not have leg issues then. But since so many people do, and get better after adding niacin it is usually suggested right away.

But if your vet and nutritionist say you don't need to supplement I would trust them. My ducks are on Mazuri now and I don't supplement. They get regular check-ups including bloodwork. I have really fabulous avian vets who are experienced with ducks. They've never told me to supplement. Of course, mine are adults, on the maintenance formula, and don't have a sprain. Still, I would trust your vet. That's why you have one, right?

Yes!! Exactly! I was not planning on adding the niacin now. I am though a bit concerned about the leg possibly needing x rays.. the vet I am going to on Thursday is an avian certified vet ... though the one I saw yesterday was wonderful.. but no access to them on a weekend in case of emergency... the one on Thursday actually called me to talk about my duck... even though she was not his patient yet!! Wonderful!!

I am just a bit too nervous with them.. lol every odd thing I feel I am making a big deal out of ... I think I need to relax a bit!
Lol
They are all thriving and happy .. so mom needs to take a chill!!
Haha.
Thanks for your input !

Your poor little babies!!! Good thing they have you!! The Mazuri is great isn’t it?
Hey at 2 weeks the nutritionist said I could add a little maintenance to decrease protein a bit or leave them on the starter until fully feathered - what did you do.?

Unfortunately I don't remember - it was 5.5 years ago. The wrong thing, probably. The feed store just told me to use what they sold me until it ran out, I assumed they knew what they were talking about. *Sigh* I wish I knew this much before I got ducks. I thought I researched enough but I was so wrong.
