Backyard homestead as an income?

You can also sell quail eggs without a permit or special inspections in CA.

If you're interested in getting NPIP you should look into getting on the waitlists for the pullorum antigen, and/or contact the State department to see what their backup plans are. There is a shortage nationwide right now so the testing procedures are getting messed with.
In California to sell eggs you are supposed to have an Egg handler's license obtained from the California Department of Food and Agriculture. Because Eggs are protein they are included in the "meat" section. They do not come and inspect your farm, chickens or even your eggs. It's all done on paper. I am not positive but I do believe that quail eggs are included as "fowl". You can check facts at cdfa.ca.gov. We have to be careful because there is an outbreak of Newcastle's disease in California. Mostly in the LA area but also one case in Alameda county. I do not think that NPIP allows one to sell eggs in California, you need the Egg Handler's license to do that. Most people that sell eggs get the license from cdfa but don't comply with every requirement. I know I don't. You are supposed to weigh the eggs and label the package "small", "medium", "large", etc. Also put the grade according to the air cell. I do neither. I package my eggs all together, no matter what size! No one really cares. Farm Fresh Eggs are quite popular and most folks don't want them all sized up and graded like in the stores! That's the fun of buying fresh eggs from a farm! I mix all the colors too and people love that.

Thank you for this, I think I totally missed it when I was originally doing all my research. I think I must've only found the USDA information and the CA backyard flock information before. I don't have any egg orders at the moment, only chicks, so I'll look into this ASAP. It doesn't even look like the per dozen fees pertain to anything other than chicken eggs, that's nice.

Really think again if you think you'll make a profit off eggs from a backyard flock, though, OP. :lau

I know I would need more than just eggs to turn a real profit :lau
My husband is most excited after I mentioned there could be tax benifits kand potential deductions for infrastructure & improvements) that help alone would be amazing.
Evidentally the NPIP in california only accepts 50 back yard flocks into their subsidized program, I am tyinf to find info on the regular program, but it is like sifting through a maze. Lol.

In Texas NPIP just means your flock has been tested for a disease that pretty much doesn't exist anymore. To me...the title means absolutely nothing. It does not mean that one has a healthy flock.

Agreed not an indicator of health the title doesnt mean much past the govt regs i had only put it forward as another outlet for legal out of state sales.

A shortage of the antigen used to do the actual blood test on the birds.

I talked to the local tester for here she said shes gonna test me in two wks but all across the country weve sent every test we can to the VND in the west.

Also lost @CoturnixComplex 's quote glad to see you here hunny id forgotten your in CA! I wanted to agree its just about regulations and not looking over my shoulder. Wont even matter much in how i bring in birds cuz if i can help it i Dont, and if i do, then the quarantine is just good sense. If i got even 1k$ worth of fines tho and i couldnt ever have birds again id be devastated.

Ronnie i really wish you the best of luck dear i hope it works out for you. Sorry i got lost over the wkend but glad your getting some good real time advice from others.
