Bacteria levels in the run

Hi there,
We've had our new point of lay hens now for 4 days and they've pretty much stripped the run of most vegetation. The run has to be permanent due to space. We're now putting down straw for them to rake through to make finding their scratch a bit more exciting. Any have any suggestions for keeping the bacteria and parasite levels down on in the soil, that won't harm the chickens. I've read about people using lime but like I said, the run is permanent, so not really an option. It's around 2m by 6m and we have 4 hens. Thanks in advance :)

HI there! Welcome to BYC.
Using the deep littler method is one of the best things to use for a run.
I use it and I have never had to put anything down for bacteria or parasites.
The chickens and the DLM do all the work.

Thanks for your reply. So you just keep laying fresh straw and the old safely composts underneath?
Cheers

Yes...I actually use hay and grass clipping and dried leaves from the yard..
It turns into a nice "dirt" that every once in a while I rake some out and add it to my garden.
i love the stuff.
It keeps flies away too!

A good mix of dry plant matter is best.
Adding too much of any one thing can create anaerobic nastiness.
