Hi everyone,

I have 1.5 year old Marans who stopped eating on Friday but was still drinking quite a bit. On Sat her breathing sounded like a low clucking. This got worse and she became very lethargic.

Yesterday I took her to the vet who said her lungs are very wet and gave her Marbocyl which I have to continue for 10 days. I was also given Azithromycin and told to start giving it to her if there was no improvement.

Her breathing is worse this morning and she's stopped drinking. She also doesn't want to stand up. I've tried giving her some water orally but she doesn't want it.

Apart from going back to the vet (not always available), is there anything I can try right now?

Any help appreciated as she's not in a good place.

Thanks.

Any pictures of her? How's her crop? It sounds like she might have pneumonia... do you have Tylen50 on hand?

I am very sorry you lost her.

How many other chickens do you have? Anyone else showing symptoms?

To know what exactly the issue was, you could send her in to your state vet lab for necropsy.

I have 7 others and all are running around as normal.

Not sure that we have a state vet lab that would do that kind of thing. Certainly not unless it was at exorbitant cost.

Is it possible for you to do a home necrospy? You obviously don’t have to, it could be quite upsetting :hugs

If you do, post some pics here, and the educators might be able to diagnose what was wrong with her.

The 2nd and third post in This thread have some good advice on how to do one.
