A few months ago, I went to a Tractor Supply Co. store in Naples, Florida. When I looked at their chicks, I noticed the conditions were terrible. The livestock water tanks that they were held in were dirty, disgusting, and severely overcrowded. The chicks were so crowded that they had no room to move around with many smaller ones getting trampled and several dead chicks had already succumbed to the overcrowded conditions. I complained to the person who worked in that area. He seemed uninterested but said he would look at it. While I continued to shop, nothing was done. I told the clerk at the checkout, but she told me she was not allowed to touch or go near the chicks. Once home, I called TSC headquarters and complained. I had not really ever had a bad experience with TSC before, so fully expected them to respond; however, I got the obligatory “we will investigate and someone will call you back”. Despite repeated contact, I did not get any response. (I also tried calling several animal welfare offices in Florida, but it was after hours on the weekend and received no response from anyone.) Has anyone else had this problem with Tractor Supply or is this simply an isolated event? I don’t want to write them off over one problem store, but if it’s a widespread issue, then I would like to know. Any thoughts from y’all?

Any given chain store can have bad conditions at one of its outlets, regardless of store policy. Report that to animal welfare folks. If nobody answers when you call the first time, try again. It's the best way to get the store and chain to more stringently enforce the rules, is by getting them in legal trouble.

My local Tractor Supply sells chicks every spring and late summer. I really do wish they'd stop it. This last time there was a dead baby duck in the duck tub that was getting stepped on. Not to mention, Tractor Supply chicks are unvaccinated. Tractor Suppy does need to stop offering those poor innocent chicks for sale.

I guess it depends on the stores employers. If they are bums(probably young bums) who don't care about the sweet little fuzzballs, of course they're going to neglect them.

It's kinda the fish tanks at Wal-Mart. The water isn't too clean, and they'll always be sick or dead fish floating around. And they overfeed the bettas. And when you want to buy a fish in the tank, you have to go to the trouble of hunting an employer down. Customers also abuse the bettas. One ugly woman picked up a betta cup and shook it. It's people like them that me sick.

Yes, A year ago I had similar experience. While visiting our local TSC store there was container with new baby chicks mixed in with older chicks. My concern was the smaller chicks could not reach the waterer that was on a platform. Three chicks were frantically trying to jump up to get water with no luck. They looked weak and ready to collapse. I mentioned it to the worker at the desk several feet away and she looked perturbed and ignored me. After shopping around I rechecked chicks and still nothing had been done. At checkout I told the front cashier and she stated half of those chicks had just arrived from shipment and it was critical they get water. She assured me she would tend to it as soon as she checked out customers behind me.
