Yesterday our 2 broodies each hatched one chick. When we went to bed one was pipped. We woke this morning to a dead chick in the nest....she had pecked it's head (the first one was fine). I cleaned out the broken shells and the shell was bloody- I gave the mom the benefit of the doubt and hoped the chick had passed coming out and maybe she pecked at it after the fact. She had another starting to break out though....I checked on them throughout the morning and finally when I checked at noon the chick was out and bloodied too!! On it's head near the eye. It was still moving and wet...so I grabbed it, thought about bringing it in, but decided to try giving it to the other broody mom- she clucked a bunch but shoved it underneath her. Is there anything I should do for the wound? I don't want to bother mom or the chick trying to rest and dry for a pic....
I watched the bad mom for a little while and she was picking at her first chick....looked more like scolding type pecks...but I did notice a spot on it's head too....not bloody but a bald spot....so I went ahead and took it and gave it to the other mom too, and removed the mean one back to the hen house...I feel bad watching her cluck and pace along the fence....but....I didn't trust her to raise it right....
Is it better for the hurt one to come inside in a brooder box or stay with the mom and other chicks? Is it just a wait and see if it makes it situation?
But in good news....the Good Momma's chick is soooo cute!!
And here is the 2nd....under it's new Momma:
***I really hope the other one makes it.....2 more eggs left too...
