So I have bought Siklie eggs twice from same breeder. Each time 36 eggs, she included 6 extra.
Background info on my hatching operation.... 2 little giant foam bators, both with auto turners. One with fan
Lockdown bator is a mini fridge style still air that was used for incubation at a local college. All incubators have thermometers and hygrometers. The one with shelves has on each shelf. Everything is calibrated and holds steady temp and humidity. We use te little giants for turning eggs till lockdown and the mini fridge still air for lockdown. We hatch out about a hundred eggs a month of Amereacuna, copper Maran and olive eggers with decent hatch rates.
So we order these Silkie eggs from a breeder that has beautiful birds and good feedback on eBay. The first time we ordered in jan of 2013 the eggs arrive packed nicely in foam crate with heat pack, nothing was broken, but eggs are dirtier than whats normal. We let them rest, we set 24 hours later. At day 7 we candle, we toss 13 that were not fertile. At day 18 the remaining 28 go into lockdown. On day 21 nothing. We start getting a bit curious cuz usually bantams hatch a bit early. Day 22 we start pipping eggs. We ended up with 7 live babies and 21 dead sticky babies. Lots of Yolks not absorbed. We are sad but chalk it up to a possible u detected humidity spike and move on. These babies grow and they are beautiful. We again are bitten by the Silkie bug and decide to reorder. It's now end of April 2013.
We order 36. She sends 41. They arrive, box is not even marked "FRAGILE" or "LIVE". We open the box. This time eggs are poopy, they are individually bubble wrapped with scotch tape touching eggshell and packed in a box with shredded newspaper. Eggs kinda just free floating. We open one by one. There are 5 that r broken. We r highly disappointed as the first time they were so carefully packaged. Anyway we allow 24 hour rest period. We set. We candle on day 7, agin we toss 13. So we have 23 eggs that make it to lockdown. Day 21 again comes n goes. Day 22 not a sound from bator. We agin start opening eggs. 4 had life, but were not absorbed. None made it this time. We eggtopsied most of the eggs. What we found we have never seen. The baby in pic I'm sharing is a fully formed splash that on day 22 has not absorbed the yolk. The yolk looks nasty Carmel color. HAS ANYONE GOT ANY IDEA WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON.?? Do we have BAD SILKIE JUJU....HELP, SUGGESTIONS, IDEAS
