I made a really bad mistake 2 days ago and decided that I could put my 2.5 month old chicks in with the adults. Everything seemed fine until I got home from work. Two of the chicks squeezed through a hole. My wife caught one and on of them were still in the coop. Both were fine. However I had to look for the other and she was hiding in the grass and when I caught her the adults had pecked her head almost to the skull. It's horrible. She was still alive so I put her in an old dog house I had by her self. I came up from work today and she is still alive but when examining her wounds with a flash light it looks like maggots have invaded her wound. It's very disgusting. So I'm not really sure what to do right now. Should I mercy kill her or just keep giving her water and food and see if she survives or not. Thanks.

No you should bring her inside the house and remove the maggots!keep her inside the house until she heals or she will continue to get fly blown! Many chicks survive this kind of injure even pecked down to the skull but you will have to put some effort in to make her better. Once you get the maggots removed you can put neosporim on the wound. It might take another round of removing the maggots due to the eggs. Please keep her inside until she starts to heal! There are lots of chicks that survive this kind of injury with a little TLC. once she's inside and cleaned up and doctored you will be surprised on how she will heal! I wish you the best. Please take my advice if you care for her clean her up and move her inside she will be fine. You might need tweezers to get all the maggots out. With a little care from you I'm sure she will make it! If you leave her outside she will get fly blown and likely get infected. Please don't do that. Best of luck
God bless

Been a while since this happened. Just read the last post. How did I put her in misery? I certainly don't remember pecking her to the skull.
