i like salmon. Salmon is very expensive in phoenix, so I bought salmon cream cheese and some delicious bacon/cheese topped bagels.
Fast forward to Monday morning, and I'm outside in the cold getting my truck ready to head out for the day and the little cheepers are gathering because they think I have food. My anti-social wynadottes are too proud to be seen near me, so like to hide until the last possible moment... My rooster is busy hiding from his shadow. My barred rock pullets are dancing in and out of the other grown hens getting nibbles of the less tasty bread crumbs I'm feeding them. The RIRs, grown rocks, and americaunas are all there chowing down on bread. Even my #1 screacher, the white leghorn is unusually quiet munching away. Everyone is content and happy.
Then all hell breaks loose. One of my barred rocks hops up into the truck (floor in front of the drivers seat and grabs HALF of my salmon bagel and tears off a refreshing wedge and starts eating. Ever see what chickens do when their food is too big to eat? They hit it on the ground and try to break it... So now there are bits of salmon cream cheese all over my truck, and this chicken has discovered a frenzied taste for salmon. she jumps out of the truck with the unfinished half of my bagel in tow. 15 other chickens take after her like homing missles (except the rooster, who has finally found a safe haven from his shadow under a bucket). They go off tearing around the yard with my yummy bagel and after a few laps they start to slow down.
I decided it wasn't worth going after the poor muddy remains of my bagel, so I reach for my 2nd half and there just in the nick of time comes my RIR and surprises me by taking a big leap up and ripping off a quarter of my remaining half. SHE really likes salmon now too.
What is it with these birds?
