One of my hens has slowly been going bald on her head.

Now she has a totally bald head.

Also her comb is stiff and hard.

Her comb is the normal bright red, and so is the rest of her face and head!

The skin seem thick - but not dry and no spots or swellings.

She is acting normally - is looking after her chicks and is aggressive to the other hens.

Do I need to worry?

In the past a few hens got a disease where the combs were hard and dry with white on them It was a fungus and I treated them and they are back to normal - this other hen does not have these symptoms, so I don't think its the fungus.

sometimes when a rooster breeds with a hen he will pull her head feathers out. over time it gets pretty bad. do you think this could possibly be happening to your hen? just a thought..??

I am sure this is not the reason because that hen has chicks and won't let the rooster mate with her - she is very protective over the chicks.

It seems like the comb is very hard and thick - it used to be thinner and flexible.

Where the feathers are gone the skin of her head is also thick and bright red like the comb.

Maybe I have to get her a wig!
