Bamboo

DW wants to put our half barrel of bamboo in the run for the girls to fly up in to, and to eat any bugs etc that gather inbetween the shoots. Does anyone know if it is safe to allow chickens around bamboo, will it affect them if they eat it? Let me know!!!

Humans eat bamboo shoots so it should be okay for chickens too.

I have lots of different kinds of Bamboo all over my yard. It is really a grass, so it is completely safe for them. My girls do go inbetween the poles and pick at the bugs, but they don't climb up in the plant itself. The leaves, shoots and the sheaths all can be very sharp so they tend to leave those parts of the plant alone. As the bamboo gets thicker it will be harder for them to get between the poles, but the bugs do venture out and the girls get 'em.
