I just put my 10 chicks (7 bantams and 3 regular) outside in their make shift playpen. One of the bantam chicks, that I know is a cockerel, started trying to crow! It sounded like he was being strangled, but still... They are around 6 to 7 weeks old. Is this normal?

My bantams have started to crow after 3 months. But....my Egyptian Fayoumi rooster started crowing at 5 weeks which is a hallmark of the breed.

So I'd say while unique, not unheard of in the chicken world.

What type of bantams did you get?

My Red Pyle rooster began trying to crow at six weeks.... and hasn't stopped since. :)

The youngest I have heard my OEGB cockerels crow is about 12 weeks. One crowed once then shut up for another two months. Fine with me, LOL.

I would LOVE to have a Red Pyle rooster. Sooooo pretty

Here is another photo of my "Little Buck" as I call him. He is something else.

I have 7 silver duck wing roosters right now. Started with three and hatched 4 last year. Not one pullet in any bantam hatch! :rant :gig I only have 2 SDW hens and 2 BBRs. The BBR hens are 3 years old now and still giving me a few eggs. I love the SWDs to pieces but the Pyles are just so eye catching.

I love the name Little Buck. Trust me, these little guys have BIG personalities. I just tossed one of my Amish Barnyard mix roosters out of the coop....type of toss where you wish you could 'punt' them over the goal post. The minute he landed, here comes one of the smallest from last years hatch, Joker, dive bombing him from above. He looked like a little one pound screaming eagle coming in for the kill. I had to chuckle at Simba's expression and told him 'That'll teach you to get into a nesting bucket with a hen!'.
